EMA’s Contribution to the "Tool Showcase" Event: Microbial Communities as Environmental Pollution Indicators

On September 11, 2025, the GRAIE organized the 10th edition of its Tool Showcase, in collaboration with the ZABR Rhône River Basin Research Platform. This year’s event focuses on innovative chemical and biological integrative tools for monitoring diffuse pollution in surface waters and sediments.

Designed for technical water stakeholders and agro-environmental policy actors, the day offered hands-on sessions and case studies to explore how these tools work, where they can be applied, and how they complement traditional chemical analyses.

True to its commitment to bringing scientific discoveries into society, EMA's team participated in this event and Stéphane Pesce and Laura Kergoat presented an innovative approach to monitoring environmental pollution through the use of natural microbial communities. These microbial communities, which are inherently present in aquatic ecosystems, serve as powerful bioindicators of pollution, offering valuable insights into water quality and contamination levels.
